Betonresonanz

A slow-tempo concert written for a 6,1-second reverb and performed once, for 500 standing listeners.

The concrete blending bunker from inside, a single beam of light falling twenty-six metres to the floor.

The brief

A radio culture desk asked for a recordable concert in a room usually considered unusable. The commission was for a piece that used the reverb rather than fighting it.

What we did

The composer worked from our measured impulse response and wrote to a tempo the room could resolve. We treated only the rear third of the bunker, so the recording kept its tail while the audience at the back could still follow. There was no speech in the programme at all — with 6,1 seconds, that decision was made for us.

How it went

Broadcast the following spring and released as a live recording. Two more composers have since asked for the impulse response, which we give out for free.
