2023 · Public light walk · Kulturbüro Essen-Nord
Rußnacht
Four evenings, 1.400 visitors, one 900-metre walk along the oven front. Our most-copied format and still our most difficult one.

The brief
A district culture office wanted to open the battery to the neighbourhood without turning it into a fairground. The budget was public money and the audience were largely people whose families had worked on the plant.
What we did
No music for the first 300 metres. The walk opens in near silence with only the ovens lit, one at a time, in the order they were charged. Audio starts only at the charging deck, and it is oral history recorded with four former coke-plant workers rather than a score. Groups of 25 enter every ten minutes, which keeps the corridor legible and the escape route clear.
How it went
Sold out in nine days. Two of the four contributors came to every evening and stood at the end of the route; that was not in the plan and became the best part of it.
